Further, he added that the prevalence of Hepatitis B is old so increasing at an alarming rate among injecting drug users for similar reasons. It also adds that mental illness is also prominently seen in individuals who are frequent drug users. These include depression, personality disorders, short-term memory loss, mood alterations, and more. Here, taking from a Nasha Mukti Kendra can always be the best decision to make.

Eventually, these individuals end up involved in petty crimes and more often than not get arrested or dealt with by the juvenile justice system in the case of minors. They can also exhibit poor judgement and coordination ability that results in vehicular accidents as well, as further added by the report.

Understanding the situation with a case study

The report made an effort to involve a number of case studies to touch upon the social dimensions of substance abuse. These case studies are based on interviews taken with people facing addiction.

In one case, a 32-year-old male addict was going through a turbulent life who hailed from Punjab’s Ropar. He studied up to class 10, his father was a truck driver and his mother used to function as a housewife. Previously, he used to work for an automobile company but left his job owing to drug addiction 6 years back. Today, with no specific source of income, he is dependent on his father to meet his daily expenses. The person is married with a three-year-old son and doesn’t enjoy a good relationship with his family members.

According to the respondent’s parents, the economic condition of the family used to be good earlier but it worsened over time. Talking about his physical appearance, he looks older than his actual age and his behavior has totally changed as well. He used to be a kind and helpful person but has become careless now. Along with losing weight and developing more aggressive behavior, he has also lost interest in his usual activities.

The report states that even during the interview his behavior was constantly fluctuating. For example, he responded positively during the initial stage of the interview which later turned to upset and refused to answer at times.

He said that he initially started taking drugs for enjoyment which became an addiction with time passing. He stated that after taking drugs, he feels fresh, active and relaxed, and cannot work without consuming drugs while at least taking them once a day. To satisfy his drug addiction, he has taken loans from friends and stolen household things to pay for the drugs.

Another interview was taken with a 20-year-old man who is currently studying XII standard. In the interview, he stated that he started consumer and alcohol on a regular basis in class 9 and further started consuming Cannabis as well. As per the report, his primary reason for starting drug consumption was self-experimentation and not peer pressure.

Similar cases of drug addiction have been reported where individuals are seriously affected by drugs. This not only affects their physical and psychological well-being but also affects their social abilities and family relations.
